5. C-141 STARLIFTER Long Range Transport
Prominent for its role in returning freed U.S. prisoners after
the Vietnam cease-fire, the C-141 StarLifter was the mainstay of
the Military Airlift Command's transoceanic air missions between
Southeast Asia and the U.S. The 284 StarLifters built by
Lockheed-Georgia nearly doubled the Air Force's airlift
strength, cutting costs of delivering cargo from the U.S. east
coast to Saigon by half, time by a third. Maximum takeoff weight
316,000 lbs. Length 145 ft.; wingspan 160 ft. Cargo compartment
10 ft. wide, 9 ft. high, 70 ft. long; four Pratt & Whitney
engines, 21,000 lbs. thrust each. |
