29. CLEAN SWEEP Oil Recovery Device
Oil spills are a problem of public concern Lockheed's CLEAN
SWEEP is now used by oil refineries, petrochemical plants, oil
spill cooperatives, railroad yards and has been tested in
food-processing plants, A very large air-transportable prototype
has been built for the Coast Guard to clean up high-seas oil
spills. CLEAN SWEEP resembles the paddlewheel of an old river
boat. Vanes of the rotating drum pull in surface oil which
adheres to metal discs. Stationary wiper blades sweep the oil
into a slotted axle from which it is pumped to storage. |

30. REMOTE HEALTH Care System
Lockheed Missiles & Space Company has installed for a two-year
test a system that will enable residents of sparsely populated
areas far from physicians or a medical facility to receive
expert medical care, The STARPAHC (Space Technology Applied to
Rural Papago Advanced Health Care) system was developed, built,
and installed on the Papago Reservation in Arizona under NASA
contract and with the cooperation of the Indian Health Service
of the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. STARPAHC
combines advanced medical instrumentation with computerized data
techniques and voice and picture transmission from mobile and
fixed-base units. Using the system, specially-trained paramedics
will be able to send analytical data to enable physicians at a
hospital to diagnose illnesses and prescribe treatment. |
